- Pros
Duplexer for printing on both sides of a page. Scans and faxes over network. Standalone copier and fax.
- Cons
Slow. Text quality is at the low end of the typical range for ink jet AIOs.
- Bottom Line
The Lexmark X9350 is a little slow, but it offers lots of features for the price, including duplexing, network support, and standalone copying and faxing.
neither company likes to talk about it, but it's no secret that lexmark manufactures some of dell's printers and aios. in many cases, lexmark also sells clearly similar versions, but that doesn't mean they're identical. a case in point is the lexmark x9350 ($280 street). it looks much like the dell photo all-in-one 966 printer that i recently reviewed, and it offers essentially the same features. yet even though it turned in a performance nearly identical to the 966 on our business applications suite, it's not simply the same printer with a different logo on it. in fact, it's better than the dell 966 in some ways and not as good in others.

the x9350 is one of the few aios clearly designed to fill a dual role, in both the home and home office. for home use, it focuses on photos. it has a pictbridge connector and card slots so it can print directly from cameras and memory cards, and a 2.4-inch color lcd to let you preview photos before printing.
for the home office, it works not just as a printer and scanner, but as a standalone copier and fax machine as well. it offers both wired and wireless network support with the ability to scan and fax over a network. other important office-centric conveniences include a duplexer for printing on both sides of the page; a 50-page automatic document feeder (adf) for scanning, copying, and faxing multipage documents; and the ability to fax from a pc's hard drive and scan to e-mail by way of your pc.
at 10.6 by 18.3 by 15.1 inches (hwd) and 22.5 pounds, the x9350 is a comfortably small size and weight for a home office. setting it up on a network is easy. remove the packing materials, load paper, plug in the network cable and power cord, insert the black and tricolor ink cartridges, and run the automated installation routine. one nice touch, compared with the dell 966, is that the x9350 comes with the duplexer and network card already installed.
speed is not one of the x9350's strong suits. on our business applications suite, it essentially tied the dell 966's slow speed at 23 minutes 12 seconds (timed with qualitylogic's hardware and software). the less-expensive canon pixma mp600 took only 12:13.
photos also took a relatively long time to print. like many ink jets, the x9350 lets you swap out the black cartridge for a photo cartridge to improve photo quality with six-color printing. with the photo cartridge, it averaged 2:19 for a 4-by-6 and 4:55 for an 8-by-10. in comparison, the dell 966 took 1:53 and 3:51 printing with six colors. the canon mp600 was faster still, at 51 seconds and 1:49, respectively.
the x9350 does better on output quality than on speed, but its quality is less than impressive. the text quality was at the low end of the typical range for ink jet aios, making it a match for the dell 966. all of the standard fonts in our tests were easily readable with well-formed characters at 6 points, but only one passed that threshold at 5 points, and two heavily stylized fonts with thick strokes needed 20 points. count the text as good enough for most business needs, but i wouldn't recommend it for documents that need to convey a sense of professionalism.
graphics and photo quality are both typical for ink jet aios, but a half step below the dell 966's quality level. i saw some minor banding in graphics, particularly in default mode, and a tendency for thin lines to disappear. as long as you steer clear of thin lines, however, the graphics are adequate for internal business use. whether you'd consider them good enough to give to an important client depends on how much of a perfectionist you are.
photo quality is similarly a touch short of ideal. i saw a slight differential gloss, with light reflecting differently from different parts of the image from some angles. and in one photo, i saw posterization in skin tones, with color changing suddenly where it should change gradually. even so, most photos in our tests qualified as true photo quality, suitable for framing. they're also waterproof enough to pass around on a hot, humid day without worrying that they'll come back smudged by moist fingers.
one problem the x9350 shares with the dell 966 is that it reliably crashed whenever i tried printing photos from a canon compactflash card, even though it worked with another compactflash card. oddly, lexmark was unable to confirm the incompatibility, even though dell confirmed it for its printer. in any case, if you run into this problem, you can still print from your camera if it supports pictbridge.
two advantages the x9350 has over the 966 are easier-to-use control software for aio features such as faxing from your pc, and a significantly lower price for the same configuration, with duplexer and network support. either aio is a good fit for dual duty in a home and home office, but if you don't mind waiting a little longer for your photos and sacrificing just a touch of photo and graphics quality, the x9350 gives you essentially the same features for less.
